About Impacts and Activities

  • Rainwater Harvesting - trained 3,700 individuals and constructed 4,800 rain barrels through classes offered at the center and in the region with partnering municipalities. Resulting in the collection of 7.6 million gallons of water, reduction of 7,000 pounds of non-point source pollution and a saving stakeholders $60,000 on their water bills.
  • Developed 22 classes on landscape water conservation and irrigation for homeowners in which we partner with local municipalities to teach. 
  • Conducted 243 educational programs dealing with water use efficiency, landscape water conservation and irrigation efficiency reaching 12,000 homeowners thereby saving 7 million gallons of water per year.
  • Youth – participated in 86 events conducting programming to youth on water conservation utilizing the stream trailer, enviroscapes, rainwater harvesting demo, dual flush toilet, etc. These programs reached 7,620 youth
  • Master Gardener Specialist Trainings – Conducted a Master Gardener Rainwater Harvesting Specialist and two Master Gardener Irrigation Efficiency Specialist Trainings.  Trained 212 Master Gardeners who have conducted over 8,000 hours of service and trainings on irrigation efficiency and rainwater harvest for their respective communities. 
  • Participated in 24 local/regional environmental fairs, conferences and green expos reaching over 500,000 individuals.
  • Conducted a regional water-wise irrigation symposium with 180 participants
  • In coordination with EPA region 6 conducted a WaterSense Labeled home builder’s symposium to educate local homebuilders and developers to build WaterSense labeled new homes. 
  • Collaborated with the Turfgrass Program to facilitate the Turfgrass Field day at the AgriLife Research Center in Dallas
  • Installed 12 rainwater harvesting demonstrations and 3 rain garden demonstrations. These where in conjunction with local schools and the Dallas Zoo.
  • Initiated a monthly electronic newsletter with helpful tips on water conservation, landscaping, pest control and marketing of upcoming Center activities.  Circulation of almost 3,000 individuals.
  • Launched a Facebook page titled AgriLife Dallas Water University to share helpful water saving tips, to promote educational classes and share water related information through social media.
  • Hosted 13 tours of the WaterSense Labeled Home and Apartments to Garden Clubs, Cities, Realtor groups, Engineering firms, agency personnel, builders and contractors reaching over 1,000.
  • Partnered with Dallas Water Utilities, the cities of Allen, McKinney, Plano, Richardson, Frisco, Garland and 8 irrigation firms to hold a spring and fall WaterSmart Irrigation trainings for homeowners.  The event was attended by 384 individuals
  • In partnership with EPA and Fix a Leak Week Campaign, the urban water team launched our irrigation outreach campaign, Find it, Flag it, Fix it.  Where we provide information on irrigation repairs utilizing irrigation flags. EPA is looking to utilize the campaign nationwide next year.
  • Conducted educational programs and had a booth display at Learn to Live Green Plano discussing plant selection, rainwater harvesting, turfgrass, and water other landscape water conservation practices.  Reached 30,000 people
